Yes, the Walker Tompkins books were a big influence on me when I was a
kid. I loved them, especially "CQ Ghost Ship" and "SOS at Midnight"
Long before ARRL picked them up, the books were reprinted in 1971 in
paperback by Sagamore Books/Peregrine Press. I bought 3 of them then.
Another big influence on me was the "Chuck White" (W9FB) series in
"Treasure Chest" magazine. Anybody remember these?
Adventure stories are a great way to fire a kid's imagination fir ham
radio. You also need an "adventure radio". Good adventure radios would
be the Ten Tec receiver kits and the Scout, which makes a great portable
rig for family outings, camping, and other "adventures"
