Just to echo the praise of the Corsair receiver:
I finally got my Corsair (orig) connected up to the Beverage receive antenna
on 160M last weekend and was able to do A/B comparisons of its performance
with a top-shelf modern Japanese rig. In pulling the weak cw signals out
from the static crashes, the Corsair performed beautifully. Several times
CW signals were still 100% copy on the Corsair when they were only about 50%
copy on the other rig, as the signal turned mushy in the noise. The high
level of (adjustable) gain in the rf/if stages of the Corsair was more than
enough for the unamplified Beverage signals.
I have to add that the Corsair was running with AGC off. This is the
obvious glaring weakness of the Corsair in high static conditions. Sure
wish I could retrofit a different AGC circuit and bring it up to par with
the excellent rf/if chain.
