Another possible cause of the sticking meter problem might be static!  I know 
of one sticky meter that was cured with a zap from one of those old 
antistatic guns used for LP's [I'm sure all the OT's like me remember 
LP's--if you need to ask, don't  ;-)  ]

Just another easy thing to try, without dismantling the meter.
