i've done this. results are encouraging so far. using netmeeting on
several systems connected via an ethernet 10-baseT network provides
interesting possibilities. i've got audio feeding both ways as well as the
ability to control the remote desktop at the same time.
netmeeting adds a very slight digital sound to the audio, as one might
expect, but it's not bad to listen to at all. i've tried just a couple of
experiments transmitting audio from a remote system and although it did
work, i didn't have time to fine tune the technique. it's on my list of
things. one problem was that of transmit latency, e.g., there's up to a
second delay in the transmitted audio. probably not an issue for general
use, but may be a problem for contesting.
anyway, i had a ethernet card go down and lost some time while waiting for a
replacement, but did get back to it last night. i'll let everyone here know
how my continued experiments go.
