Hi, Richard...
For $100, I'd suggest one of the Ten-Tec QRP kits, or the DSW-line kits
from Small Wonder Labs.
Your students will gain two valuable skills: electronic assembly and
learning Morse Code, as these are 5-watt CW transceivers. Some folks
are hesitant to get new hams started in QRP, because it takes patience
and perseverance to communicate with 5 watts or less.
While $100 won't go too far in ham radio today, there are far too many
people who believe that ham radio is a rich man's hobby. Guess they've
seen a club station, a contest station, or a shack that a ham has
built over many years, and conclude that it takes a sizable upfront
investment to get going.
Good luck with your project!
