I tried a cheapo 25A PSU (switch mode) and it buzzed loudly (I mean VERY
loudly) in time with my CW and SSB. It was audible all over our home, so
I took it back. I got an even cheaper one and it works fine, except for
some fan noise when it reaches the preset temperature. Its OK as long as
its well out of the way under the bench, and on a thick carpet. Both
supplies were from the Orient .. most of them are.

The moral is that they all work; some may not be all that well
protected against over voltage and some may be extremely noisy under
the cyclic loads typical of ham use. Analogue supplies are best (for
me anyway). Try before you buy ...

This weekend I saw a humongous switch mode supply; 125 amps at 12v. It
was fairly portable (I have seen computer supplies nearly that size).
It was also UK built, new (surplus) and they wanted around $350-400
for it. Now that would have handled my Herc II and Omni-V very nicely,
but I decided that filtering hash from a 125 amp rail was not trivial.
I'll stay with my T*T 9420 analogue supply. Its definitely not portable,
but it works fine.
