Bill... Was the whine evident on the speaker or just in your headphones?
My Scout has no whine in the speaker but if I plug headphones into the panel
jack I hear a whine. I was able to overcome it through the use of an
in-line volume control from Radio Shack. It has 1/8" stereo plug and jack.
Sorry but I don't remember the p/n. By adding attenuation in the line with
this assembly and cranking up the Scout volume control to compensate for it,
the whine disappears.
If I remember correctly this jack is actually for an external speaker not
headphones as it comes from the factory.
I have been totally satisfied with my Scout while mobile SSB and at the base
on SSB and CW using speaker and headphone.
