Well, in my old days in the military, (AACS, circa 1950), we were taught
to
run RF full bore. The idea being, you can't do anything with a signal
until
you get it into the RX. I continue to run that way with the Omni VI+ and
while
I have experimented with turning the RF gain down, I keep going back to
the "old way" that I know and find exceptional. Filters, NB & PBT
help, of
course, but I find the 250hz filter rather useless as the idea is to copy
CW
signals via tone without regard for closeby signals. In a CW contest
doing
S&P I might use the 500 hz filter, but when 'running', the RX is wide
open
with the RF gain at full bore. Contesters don't zero beat. And then,
you
just copy 'em and log 'em. Wonderful rigs, these Ten-Tecs. AGC is
always
ON and FAST; never even thought about operating otherwise.
