I noticed the same thing while testing/measuring IR filters. When I checked
the same filter later on (after more warmup) the bandpass curve shifted.
I used Omni VI mod+ and IC 781 in the contest. Few times I switched between
them, to see how much better the Omni is, but was not overwhelmed. 781
allowed better audio tailoring for more comfortable and adjustable audio
characteristic. With addition of DSP 599, even more flexibility. At the times
even 125 Hz filter in 781 pulled things that other filters or Omni would not
hack it. I could not say that Omni was quieter, lower noise floor? 90% of the
time the main rig was 781.
Think that I like, is Omni VI being companion to 781 as a second radio,
allows transceive, sharing VFO or dual receive with tracking (will need
calibration when drifting stops). Computer control scheme is the same
(similar?) as Icom and Icom interface works with both.
Omni was loaded with "CW combo" built in - IR 2.1, N1 - TT 1.8, N2 - IR 400,
2nd IF built in TT 1.8, then switchable TT 500, IR 400, IR 250.
Icom had IR 400, 250, 125.
Brief check between Omni and TS870 with IR filters mods also didn't produce
what charts in the TT ads show (noise floor). Maybe this TenTec "thing" is
more like (religious) Apple following? Final judgment will be after some
tests on the bench, where things can be measured more precisely.
Looks like everybody enjoyed higher bands, 160m was lonely, very few callers.
Beacons were NQ4I, HC8N and Eh? (VA1A). I hoped for more friends to drop by
and say 59something. I beat my VE3BMV 13 year old record, but came short of
world record, not enough activity.
