Richard, if the display wanders but still responds to PTO tuning, check
the Time Base board, 80974, especially Y1 and C1, C2, and C3. If it
goes to a strange frequency but does not change with PTO tuning (it
may change with sideabnd changes or band changes), the fault is in the
counter logic board, 80973. The U3 counter uses programmable presets
via pins 11, 12, 13, and 14. Make sure the voltages on these pins
change when switching bands or sidebands. In my case, one of the ceramic
capacitors (C6, C7, C8, C9) was shorted which caused erroneous
programming, so I didn't have to start an major search for the obsolete
counter chip!
