I'll like to add my input into the Delta 580 display
discussion.
The Delta 580 was first put on the market in 1980, shortly
after the WARC had approved the three new ham bands of 30,17
and 12 meters. The Delta was Ten-Tec's first completely new
model with WARC capabilities. However, at the time of its
release, the new bands had not been opened for use. I
believe 30 meters was opened around 1981, but the others
didn't become available for U.S. hams until much later into
the 1980s.
So when somebody bought a new Delta 580 in the early 1980s,
the rig's switch had the positions for the new bands, but no
crystal in the heterodyne oscillator. Apparently, the
display still works, even without the crystals. As the bands
became available for use, Ten-Tec sold the crystals for the
new bands.
I have a Delta I bought used a few months ago. It has
crystals in the 17 and 12-meter positions, but somebody
apparently bought nonstandard crystals with frequencies
about 20 KHz from what should have been installed. Thus, my
12 and 17 meter bands work, but the frequency display is off
by about 20 KHz. I know Ten-Tec sells the crystals for $25
each, but I wonder if any other crystal supplier can custom
make them cheaper? I'd be interested in hearing.
