The thread about Jason KA7UAM's post on TVI problems brings two things to
mind: first, the bandpass filtering in his old Hallicrafters may indeed
be a bit tighter than the "D"; and second, just as an FYI for any future
TVI issues, an experience I had when I bought my present house. I decided
that I didn't need the cable TV drop and asked the cable company (a small
rural outfit absentee owned by one of the conglomerates) to remove it
(because it affected where I wanted to put up ham antennas). After
several weeks of non-action on their part and a few follow up phone calls
they finally to remove it myself if I wanted that done. When I did, I
discovered that the "ground" wire from the coax connector block on the
house went into the ground about 2" -- THERE WAS NO GROUND ROD
ATTACHED!!! Apparently the installer didn't want to mess with a ground
rod (the place sits on solid rock with trucked-in topsoil on top) and
just stuck the wire into the ground to make it look like it was properly
grounded. The moral of the story is that if your local cable system
follows similarly sloppy installation procedures there is plenty of
potential for TVI. Don't overlook simple things like this in the
troubleshooting process.
