I don't think that you got the straight dope from Ten-Tec, unless they've
discontinued the upgrades. They used to supply upgrade "kits" that
included all of the necessary components. It does involve adding at least
one crystal, a few coils and caps. Essentially you would be modifying the
low pass filter board and the oscillator/mixer board as I recall.
Note that I have kits in quotes above, as they are not kits in the
conventional sense of the word. They are bags filled with components and
very brief instructions as to the modifications.
There were also quite a few other mods, depending on the vintage... Series
B mod, dial lamp (make it dimmer) mod, tilt bail mod, MOV mod...
Ten-Tec does tend to support equipment for the radio manufacturer
equivalent of forever, but perhaps they have finally given up the ghost on
the "original" Omni series.
I would call back and speak to someone back in the service department.
There used to be a "John" there that was the Omni wiz, but don't know if
that same "John" is still there...
At any rate, congratulations on your "new" Omni-D-- enjoy!
