I am the proud owner of an OMNI VI but have been having doubts regarding
its frequency accuracy.
Unfortunately my frequency counter, which uses a 10 Mhz clock crystal in
it (even though it has an oven in it) hasn't been calibrated in about 10
or 11 years. I think it's close, but surely not right on. W W V at 10 Mhz
is hard to use because for some reason I can not hear an exact zero beat.
It seems hard to accurately zero beat a signal on the OMNI VI--is there a
trick to it? Zero beating the receiver as best as I can gives me
different results on the different modes on the OMNI. It seems that on
USB I get a zero beat about 100-150 hz high, on LSB it's very close under
50 hz I think, while on cw it seems to be low. I try to use the most
intelligible voice sound on ID for W W V
in lieu of hearing a true upper nad lower zero beat.
Using the counter as a rough reference point, I set the radio to
10.000.00 Mhz, using a dummy load, transmitted a signal in all 5 modes in
the TUNE position. What I found has confused me. This is what I've found;
IN TUNE
CW: Transmit frequency approx . -30 hz below 10 Mhz (shpuldn't it be my
offset of 700hz?)
USB: Transmit frequency approximately 2.55 khz above 10 Mhz!
LSB: Transmit frequency approximately -430 Hz below 10 Mhz!
RTTY: Transmit frequency approximately +1.688 Khz above 10 Mhz
FM: Transmit frequency approximately +9.558 Khz above 10 Mhz.
First of all what mode is activated in tune? Is it the mode last
selected? Why are the frequency readings all different?
On receive I notice most frequency error is on USB, LSB and CW seem
closer to assumed actual. What bothers me is this wide discrepancy in
transmit frequencies.
What gives? Any suggestions?
This reflector is just great and so is the gear. Only wish I had enough
$$$$ for a TITAN amp!!

Art, N2KA
