Hi John: Thanks for the great comparitive report for the Corsair II
and the Omni-VI.
I would like to comment on the qsk output from the OMNI-VI.
As you pointed out, it is different than the Corsairs. But - I have
found it is real easy to make it work with about anything.
Obviously, the system was designed for electronic control by
having the OMNI request permission to transmit, and the amplifier
allowing transmit after all switching is completed. I used that
system with my old Yaesu FT-7000 and it was flawless.
My homebrew amp has vacuum relays, and how I overcame the problem was to
use the request signal drive an opto-isolator which energized the relays.
My input relay is 2 ms slower than my output (Spec's from mfg on the
RF-1A and the RJ-1a relays) The inhibit and enable lines from the
OMNI are parallel so we hot switch the 50 watts into the amp, but not
the output. (Due to the speed of the relays)
Using this system, I can run 1500 watts qsk and it still sounds just
like it does when barefoot. The same principle could apply to your
Drake amp by adding an R/C contant on the input relay, slowing it down
a tad.
By the way - I hardly ever use qsk. My old cathode keyed, class C
brain gets too confused with all the qrm! See ya' de KL7HF
