I went through the same problem (no 5V at pin 14) on a Compaq laptop. After
trying all kinds of things, including upgrading the BIOS, it finally started
working. Unfortunately, it was one of those situations where it just
suddenly started working and it wasn't clear why. Consequently, I really
can't give you any real suggestions, except to keep trying.
During this process I checked a lot of other computers. Most did provide the
5V, but a few others did not. Does anyone know how to drive pin 14 high, in
case a particular LPT port is not providing that 5V?
