I have just completed doing most of the "standard" mods to my TS850's;
1) Sidetone level via MONI control (TNX Tree)
2) RX antenna IN &OUT on back panel
-(TNX Tree, Ville, N3OC - I used the DSP 1 and 2 jacks so I didn't have to
drill any holes)
3) Internal CW Keyer and External Keyer mod (TNX N7EX)
4) Level Control on the DRU-2 (TNX K6LL - needed 150K on mine)
I also made a mod of my own that automatically places the 850 in Break-In
(VOX) mode when you go to CW without depressing the VOX switch. The
Full/Semi switch functions normally with this mod. I had done this years
ago to my 940 and almost forgot about it. (It was much easier on the 940!)
This prevents the rig from being automatically in VOX (which I never use)
when switching back to SSB after a CW session. Basically, I'm too lazy to
have to push the VOX button every time I change modes. This requires some
relatively delicate soldering around some surface mount stuff and a 22K 1/4
watt resistor. It is less difficult than the MONI control mod and should be
done when you're doing the internal/external keyer mod as you have to lift
the IF board up when you do both these mods. If anyone is interested in
this, please send me an email and I'll try to draw up a schematic of it.
(On the 940, just place a 1N914 from the CW mode LED+ to the appropriate
terminal on the VOX switch on the front panel. )
I also figured out how to turn my Kenwood IF-232C into an IF"4"32C by adding
about $7 worth of parts which allows me to control both of my 850's
independently and delivers all the RTS and CTS stuff that many "picky"
programs (CT, DX4WIN etc.) unlike TRlog seem to need. This one is going to
take longer to document, but I'll be glad to share this one too.
A real easy thing to do is in the manual and Kenwood tells you how to build
a homebrew an "RM-1" that is standard equipment for the 950SDX. It's a
remote keypad that moves many functions out from the front panel including
the CW memories (which do not require the DRU-2 despite what the manual
says). I put one of these together for about $18 including a $9 Hammond
cast aluminum case that looks FB on my operating table. Just getting the
TF-SET switch remoted is worth the cost. Highly recommended.
