This may not seem like the most obvious best answer... but I
have found myself pressing F9 to send a ? and let them send the
call again...

You also get the advantage of not making the QSO if he is a dupe
(important in the SS where the QSO takes a long time) plus calling
him by name if you want - and having visability of needed bands for
mults or QSOs.

There is a good arguement for not sending the exchange until you
know the call. That way, you minimize the change of the guy running
off without sending his call if he missed the fact you needed a file
and just sends you an exchange. I have found this to be important on
6 meters.
