Greetings to all SECC members!

I am Tom Alderman and have been W4BQF for a long time! This past June at the
Atlanta ham fest I was elected President of the SECC for the year 2010/2011
and am fortunate to have serve with me the following SECC members:

Ralph Bates - K1ZZI - Vice President
Fred Dennin - WW4LL - Secretary
John Laney - K4BAI - Treasurer

A short W4BQF bio:

Born and raised in Valdosta, Ga. Graduated from VHS when the VHS Wildcats
were winning everything! Attended VSC for two years, studying pre-dentistry.
Then became 'intelligent' and joined the Navy. Spent some 11 years in the
Navy as an aviation electronics technician and spent six of those eleven
years attending Navy electronics school, when they were teaching theory.

Although widowed in 1982, I was 'raised' by a wonderful daughter and a great
pair of twin boys, all three of whom keep close tabs on me!

After the Navy, spent about 20 years in Microwave circuit and systems
design, the last three years as Director of Microwave Engineering. My first
microwave amplifier was designed using a slide rule! Then went to work at my
most boring job ever, computer network specialist for the federal
government. I lived in the Washington DC area for 36 years, until retirement
and then moved back to south Georgia to help take care of my then 96 year
old Mother.

I actually live in Cecil, Ga., which with a population of 370 folks, does
not qualify for its own post office and therefore the reason for my Hahira
mailing address. My home is on 15 acres and 'accidentally' has a very old
250 acre mill pond at the back of the property.

Ham History

Licensed as WN4BQF, I think in the fall of 1951. My Dad was W4BVK and he ran
traffic, so it was pretty natural for me to follow in his footsteps. I ran
traffic with the GaStateNet, the GaStateSlowNet, the 4RN, and the EAN. I was
net control of the GSN, 4RN, and EAN. Recently I worked for two years for
Mike/NE4S in the GQP, helping reformat the rules to make them more clear to
newcomers, plus handling the purchase and distribution of GQP plaques.

Sometime in the early 70's I became interested in high speed CW, in excess
of 60 wpm and only ear copy. Finally got to where I could enjoy QSO's at
speeds in excess of 100+ wpm. Also became interested in contesting in the
mid-70's and was fortunate enough to operate two consecutive years at
W3LPL's great multi-multi contest station. I am still trying to beat K4BAI
in ANY contest. I actually won first place in Georgia in the ARRL DX contest
in 2005, 06, and 07. You will also recall that K4BAI, N4GG, and others were
operating out of state during those three years! I enjoy RTTY contesting,
but have yet to try other digital contest.

Now there is a new challenge. To beat both K4BAI and K1ZZI in ANY contest.
Toward that effort I am in the process of installing a 70' 45G tower with
40m through 10m OptiBeam yagi's.

Next week, I will provide some of the information that the officers and I
have been discussing, toward improving the SECC and more specifically
enhancing contest participation, making it somewhat more fun and more
helpful. I encourage each and every member, who has any SECC issue, to
contact myself or any of the officers for assistance or issue discussion.

73 to all,

Tom Alderman - W4BQF
President - SECC - 2010/2011

Frankfurt air controller to American Airlines pilot:
Flight 206. Have you ever flown into Frankfurt before?
Pilot: Yes. In 1944, but I didn't stop...
