I actually make a habit of using the name Jay on CW contest. I found that
the name Jeremy just leads to many problems -- alot of people copy Jerry for
some reason. After having a ton of busted Q's because of it I went with Jay.
Kind of close and a lot shorter --- not to mention the amount of time it
saves sending. I actually asked a similar question when I was originally
considering the switch and the response I received was pretty solid towards
it being a good thing. Now when I do operate any CW contest I ALWAYS use the
JAY name. Sure someone who has talked to me before in general may be
confused but I think most people are starting to know me by that name. Heck
most don't even realize that I am the same person as KD4LCR (former call) so
as the new guy start with it and stick with it and it has worked great for
me.
And Ralph, I think that it would be a busted Q by most everyone if you
started just sending Al... Not to mention how confusing that would be.. 5NN
AL GA... AGN AGN ? lol They would think you had flipped yer lid.

Name changing is perfectly fine. It's not cheating at all and it's common
on CW in NAQP and particularly in Sprints. Sometimes a group of people will
all use the same name of a patriot contester recently SK. Sure you risk the
element of surprise and busting the Q but it's your choice.
There's a strong argument for being consistent and using the same name.
That would be my choice even with a goofy name like Ralph. Second thought I
could drop the RPH and use Al?

It may be on the edge of cheating, but if you're name is not the same as
what comes up on qrz.com, someone who was verifying you're call may toss out
the contact.
