This Week's Contests:
Not too many, since this is a split weekend between October and November.
1. NCCC Sprint Practices. Slow speed SNS. 0200-0215Z Friday (Thursday
night local). Maximum power 100W. Maximum speed 18 WPM. Exchange:
both calls, #, name, SPC. 20, 40, 80M CW. No same band dupes.
NS Practice. 0230-0259Z Friday (Thursday
night local). Maximum power 100W. Exchange: both calls, #, name, SPC.
20, 40, 80, 160 CW. Uncertain whether or not same band dupes will be
allowed this week. Next week will be a CW SS practice session. Watch
for the NCCC announcement which I will forward to the SECC and ACG
reflectors as soon as I receive it.
2. 40M QRP Fox Hunt. 0100-0230Z Friday (Thursday night local). Two
foxes (N9NE and NG7Z) will be hiding between 7030 and 7050. Work only
the two foxes. Exchange: RST, SPC, Name, Power. Run no more than 5W.
This is the first of a series that will run into the spring. Same thing
on Tuesday nights (local) between 3550 and 3570. Times will stay as
9:00 until 10:30 PM ET. So, after we go to standard time, the Fox Hunts
will be 0200 until 0330 UTC. There are teams of up to 5 QRP hounds for
each band series and the teams may be registered by the third week of
the series. I was an 80M fox last night and worked 64 QRP hounds in the
90 minute session.
Thanks to WB4A, I have a Palstar antenna tuner and was able to use the
88' CF zepp again last night after several weeks without its use. So,
for Thursday night's NCCC practice session, I should be able to set up
the tuner with the zepp for 80M and that will allow a quick QSY to 160M
with the other tuner and the "t" vertical made from the 80M inverted
vee. I will probably lose a little signal to the west on 80 with the
zepp, but will pick up a little to the northeast. The possibility of
more mults on 160 and the drop off in rate at the end of the 30 minutes
on 80 as everyone else goes to 160 should help make my scores more
competitive. As will SO2R, which I might be able to get back to work by
this Thursday or next Thursday thanks to WB4A and W4IX for
transportation of my newer MP and to W4OC for installing filters and
doing mods.
3. High Speed Club (HSC) Contest. 09-11Z and 15-17Z Sunday. 80-10M
CW. Maximum power 150W. Exchange: RST + HSC# or RST and "NM." I
usually miss this contest because it falls on the first Sunday in
November, which is usually SS CW weekend. I am a member of HSC and hope
to make a few contacts in the semi-annual club contest. Please call if
you hear me even if you are a non-member (NM).
4. November Adventure Radio Society Spartan Sprint. 0200-0400Z Tuesday
(9 to 11 PM Monday night local). NOTE: We return to Standard time this
Sunday. Change your clock ("fall back") so you won't be an hour early
for church or other Sunday activities and so your logbook and computer
logging programs will have the correct times. 80-10M CW, 5W maximum
power. Exchange: RST, SPC, power. Look for QSOs around 14060, 7030,
7040, 3560.
Hope everyone has a nice week and weekend. Wonderful weather predicted
here tomorrow with a possibility of breaking the all time high record
for that date. Hope you can find some contest QSOs to make or
otherwise some real good DX and ragchews.
73,
John, K4BAI.
