Hi All,
I'm new here and wanted to ask if anybody knows of a local contesting club that
is active in training and support of new contesters. In email with a member
last night, I learned that SECC is mostly an email club that isn't very active
as far as meeting or elmering / mentoring, except via the reflector. So, I'm
writing today to ask if SECC could be a mentoring club, or if there is a club
that will provide the information that I seek.
Also, I'm wondering if SECC does much in multi-op, and/or submits scores as a
club...and if so...if there are goals, history of scores on the web,
pre-contest training and teamwork to help each other get our stations more
competitive, etc? I think it would be fun to try to be competitive globally,
or even just against our own scores from last year, etc.
When I was looking for a club, I stumbled across the North California Contest
Club, http://www.nccc.cc
Of particular interest to me was a PDF they put out showing the summary of
member's answers to what they would like to receive training on, and how often
they would like to see training sessions.
I was excited to see that, as often as they can get qualified presenters, they
want webinars on contesting topics.
Also exciting was the fact that they do it by webinar. Being self employed, it
is very hard for me to commit evening or weekend meetings ... and to 3 or 4
hours in travel, eating, and meeting...but I can almost always get in front of
a computer.
Topics they wanted to see interested me very much including:
- contest strategy
- antennas
- cw speed & comprehension
- SO2R
- noise reduction
- logging software
- remote operation
- ergonomics
- audio files
- propagation
- towers
- rig interfacing
- digital modes
- (GA) QP
- QRP
- Field Day
Clearly, there is some time and some budget that goes in to such things. Small
meetings can be hosted on www.gotomeeting.com with a $50 monthly subscription,
but larger meetings get more expensive. Telephone conferencing also costs
something, but not too much.
I would think that each person participating would need to be willing to pay
something towards the cost of his or her online meeting slot and conferencing
cost -- but I can't imagine it is very expensive, and it would be completely
optional.
Basically, I need to find qualified presenters willing to make up a power point
and speak on any of the above issues. I am willing to go out and source the
meeting and conferencing tools, share the direct cost, and handle the
technology.
So here are my questions:
Does anyone want to volunteer to present on any of the above topics? If we get
more than one willing to present, perhaps we can vote on the order (most
popular first)?
In summary, I know I'm brand new, and if I'm barking up the wrong tree here, I
apologize -- and would appreciate any suggestions on where I can find this kind
of information in Atlanta.
