i guess the murphy family was hitting the amplifiers this weekend. as with
cort, everything was fine until an hour before the test, when the 751 wouldn't
key the amp through my freshly built external relay box. the wires came out of
the DIN plug in the back of the rig and spent two hours into the test just
trying to get them back in (i *hate* DIN plugs). then, suddenly the mic audio
was really distorted, and then noticed that the ALC was higher than cheech and
chong. so, i pulled the plug and muttered a lot of words that i wouldn't use
in front of your kids. 'oh well, i hate phone tests anyway' just didn't cut
the rationalization, so i pulled the filterless 706 out of the truck, soldered
yet another DIN connector together and played DX'er for a few hours on sunday.
no filters just sucked the big tater (especially with DF0HQ splattering over 30
khz), but it was fun just trying to see how many countries i could work in a
day on a single band.
...and i did mess around on 40m for a while one night, just for laughs, but not
in the score.
