I finally have the rig, computer, keying working. Only took a couple of weeks
with all your help.
The simplest way to send your CW messages is with the top-row function
keys. SD uses F1 to F8. Press any one (with Caps Lock ON) to send the
corresponding message. Another option, with a numeric keypad, is the 1
to 8 keys (with Num Lock Off).
F1 - your CQ Call
F2 - sends call and exchange - needs a call in the Callsign field on the
logging line.
F3 - your TU (end of QSO) message - and logs the QSO
F4 - your Dupe message. It's best to work them and make this the same
as your F2 message.
F1 to F4 are appropriate when you're running - you're calling CQ and
they're calling you.
F5 and F6 are for Search & Pounce, when you are replying to others
calling CQ.
F5 - sends your call
F6 - sends the exchange (after you have typed what was sent to you) and
logs the QSO.
To edit messages, use Shift-F1 to F8. You will have to check and edit
the exchanges before each different contest. It's not automatic, but it
is all in the manual, in particular in the Feature Summary on the last
page. There is no substitute for reading the manual. SD's manual may
have only 17 pages, but every word counts.
When editing messages, you can have any mix of parameters (as described
in the manual) and whatever text you choose.
When all this is new, it's important to practice before the contest.
