I use 4N33 opto isolators. Which is a Darlington unit.

Have an LED and a 470 ohm all in series between the serial port and the optoisolator.

worked very well when driven by a real RS-232 COM port on a desktop
computer. I can't tell you the optoisolator part numbers, but it worked
