RTTY is basically a contest-only mode. Check the RTTY subbands during the
week sometime. They are vast wastelands, even 20m. Then check the PSK
and JT65 frequencies - there is always something going on . That's why I
took up JT65, just to have something digital to do between contests. And I
don't care to ragchew or brag about my station and memberships.

No that's not right Mr Frog. RTTY is a contest and DX mode but maybe not a chat mode any more. Just look at the modes in use by all the big DXpeditions and you find CW, SSB and RTTY.

It's got really frustrating to work RTTY recently. I try to put out a few calls and check who is listening / what conditions are like. The problem is knowing what another station expects. If you call for DX they expect to exchange an incorrect 599 and go away again. Nobody wants to talk any more .. if I call CQDX maybe it's because I want to chat to someone outside Europe!

Cheers,
John GW4SKA
