Don't know why that would be the case unless the DXP38 is extremely
low input impedance or deaf.  The connections I'm giving you are
even shown on page 63 and 65 of the FT-857 manual.

Get a CAT 5 or CAT 6 (ethernet) patch cable from nearly any computer
store or Radio Shack.  Lop it in half and you have two cables to work
with.  However, I don't see anything about the mic connector in the
manual at all.
