If you omit the RST and the following space, you save 4 X 167
milliseconds, or 338 mS per contact. Over the course of a contest, if
you make 500 QSOs, you have saved 334 seconds, equal to about 5.5
minutes. That is enough time to make a dozen or more additional
contacts.
Contests have been won or lose by less than that. In other words, it
does make a difference.
