In S&P the serial number gets set for the contact when the space is
triggered.
In Run it sets the serial as soon as the call gets entered into the call
window.

Dick, if I remember correctly, the reason N1MM Logger doesn't assign a
number automatically is because when the program is set up for
multi-operator operation, in some contests the serial number is used over
multiple bands, and when it operates as the program does (not assigning a
serial number until the space bar is hit) the serial number isn't assigned
(and reserved) until you do this.
