Sort of.  But I would say:

"I did 50% better than last year, so I won!"

And when I was a complete beginner, things like "learn from the pros" and 
'It's better to soar with eagles then..." came to mind.  And after high 
school for awhile, you might graduate to becoming a "pro" if you have enough 
experience and learn enough.  After I improved my antenna situation, I just 
assumed the next step was going SO2R.  That might have been a mistake for 
me - I should've gained more experience first, because I didn't really 
improve my score that much when SO2R.  But it sure was a fun challenge and 
made slow contests from the black hole a "hole" lot more fun - more to do 
etc with SO2R.

Actually winning something tangible (cert, plaque) in these contests 
shouldn't just be a random affair.
