I took apart a house-hold-type halogen lamp and found a diode in the base.
Apparently the 100 watt lamp, if equipped with a simple diode in the base
to apply only every other half cycle, produces about 60 watts of light.
Very odd.
I can imagine that if such a diode was breaking down in reverse mode, it
would make a lot of hash.
