An excellent explanation, Richard.

Those whose motto is KISS will follow this rule:

Dash = bad.
Space = good.
USOS on TX = yes.
USOS on RX = yes.

Granted, there are situations where a dash can actually improve 
things and USOS can actually hinder. If you are psychic enough to 
recognize them in the heat of a contest, taking into account QRM, 
QRN, signal strength at both ends, etc, etc, then by all means have a 
dashed macro available and be able to turn off USOS in the blink of an eye.
