It gets worse than that. From recent experience, XP does not like to
have the motherboard hardware changed "underneath itself".
There is a utility called SYSPREP which you can use to move an existing
setup, but even that has limitations - especially in XP Home edition. XP
Pro claims to be a little smarter about being migrated. (You can search
for SYSPREP as a keyword in Help, which will connect to MS KB if you're
online.)
And of course you can't use SYSPREP if the motherboard just died on
you... so the best practical way may be to reinstall. It's said to be
good for the soul.
