5. Entry Classification:
a) Single Operator:
i) One person performs all transmitting, receiving, spotting, and logging
functions as well as equipment and antenna adjustments.
ii) Use of helpers or spotting nets is not permitted.

I may be wrong but my interpretation of 'spotting' as used above is the
single operator could spot himself to let others know where he is operating.
When I first started watching the cluster, I noticed stations announcing
their own call but not spotting other stations.
I found this pretty useful for people not really in the contest but wanting
to make some QSO's.
