My wife belongs to two Yahoo lists, but she just reads the postings and
never posts (not shy, trust me). I set her up with the Yahoo marketing
preferences set to receive nothing. Know what? She gets NO SPAM. I will
admit that she sometimes get a virus because other list members aren't
diligent about running up-to-date antivirus software.

I think most spam is due to the "spambots" harvesting email address from
posts such as this on web sites that have archives available to everyone.
qrz.com used to have email addresses in text format, but now they're in
graphical format so the "bots" can't read them. My Yahoo reflector has the
archives available only to subscribers, and I have to approve everyone who
joins (any ham is fine).

Sorry to take up the bandwidth on this non-RTTY topic, but just wanted to
share the experience in case we lose this wonderful resource.

I don't get nearly as many as when I was signed up for a yahoo group with
all the options turned off. This happened to me with 2 previous ISPs so I
decided to try not signing up for them with the last 2. The amount of junk I
receive is now much less. And what I do get is less offensive.

But one does need to go into Yahoo's "Marketing Preferences" in your Yahoo
profile and opt out of the junk mail. The default is on, which would
certainly explain your experience.

Whenever I was subscribed to a list on yahoo, my spam level went up an
order of magnitude. I will not subscribe with this addy to anything on
yahoo. They must make a mint selling addys to spammers.
