Even if I can't yet copy Baudot, I'd recognize the call AA5AU on any band by
the strength of Don's signal. He is always LOUD in the real Midwest (i.e., the
land between two rivers known as Iowa).

This is not as strange as you think. My callsign in a CQ message is very
distinctive. It could be that I probably CQ more than any station on RTTY
during contests and that you come across me more than anyone else.
Several years ago, I started recognizing the sound of my callsign in baudot.
I know it instantly when I hear it. Perhaps others, like you Andy, are starting
to recognize it as well.
I guess this is a good thing (for me anyway) hi.

Perhaps its a sign that I have been spending too much time operating RTTY
but... over the weekend I was casually in the JARTS
contest. At one period I had had the radio off for a few hours. I eventually
turned it on but left my software inactive while I
sent some email . After 10 minutes my mind became aware of a RTTY signal and I
found myself saying "that sounds like AA5AU". I
loaded up the software and sure enough, there was Don CQing away on 20 meters.
I have NO idea how my brain figured it was him.
Interesting.
