Since I must have a reason for everything :-), I tune up because:
the Mark frequency is lower. The mark frequency is more likely
transmitted than Space (don't believe me, eh? :-). And tuning
from lower to higher means you "see" the Mark first. So, more
likely not to have to "backspace" the dial.
However, when this question came up, one smart op said that
it is easier to tune by ear going top to bottom .
