Alan:

Your concern about "insurance contacts" is groundless. There were lots
of dupes in the K5K logs---we neither encouraged nor discouraged them.
If someone called us who was already in the log, we logged them and kept
going. Arguing with someone over a dupe, whether in a contest or
DXpedition situation, is a waste of time. Originally, we sought to avoid
CQWW due to the high probability of dupes and the taboo against split
operation, but everyone was in it for one reason or another, so we went
there also---and duped a lot more people.

I don't know what happened with Shelby on 80. Perhaps the operator came
back to him but never heard his reply in the noise. That failure to
complete happened to me at least once on RTTY, and, try as I did, I
could not complete the Q, and it did not go in the log. The caller
thought it had and did not call again---he came up empty and that was
that. There does have to be an exchange---this is not SWLing.

And, yes, it has happened to me, as it has happened to nearly all of us,
and the low bands are the most likely place for that to happen. A few
seasons ago, I received 3 NIL's back-to-back on 160; I'll get them next
time. Unfortunately, "next time" at Kingman is unlikely---but you never
know.
