The check engine light doesn't always need to be on for a code to be active. 
Fault codes get stored even if the light turns off. You should be able to look 
for stored fault codes.

Yep. Check engine light. On for a couple days and then off for a few more, 
repeat. I have a code reader but haven’t used it when the light is on.
