Hi Gents,
FWIW:
I purchased a battery charger from Sears a few days
ago. I've heard that some chargers can produce a
lot of RFI and this is one of them. See the model
number in the subject line.
When this charger is connected to a battery with a
resulting load on the charger, there is no noise, at
least on 160m. When the load is greatly reduced
or disconnected from the battery it does make a lot
of noise!!
The charger is properly grounded per their
instruction manual. Interestingly enough, there is NO
ON/OFF switch on this charger, so if "Joe Neighbor"
has one of these and just lets the battery leads hang
in the air with the charger plugged in, it's going to
wreak havoc on nearby radios.
I'm pretty sure I can completely cure the RFI. BUT, if I do that,
Sears is NEVER GOING TO KNOW their product is bad.
So, it's going back to Sears for a full refund and I"ll tactfully make
sure they understand WHY it's being returned. BTW,
I took note that there is no "FCC notice" in the
manual.

Charlie, N0TT
