Hi Rick,
I have also done that experiment with the electrical circuits a few times.
More often than not, like you have found, the noise that plagued me was not
from inside our home but from our in town neighbours. As you might imagine
it is the external noise we have little and often no control over. To fix
the problem we took drastic measures and moved to the country.
Over the years the HF background noise in the little town of Napanee where
we previously lived has slowly climbed. Thirty five years ago when we first
bought the house there was very little man made noise. But as demands on an
aging hydro infrastructure grew, new homes built around us, neighbours
buying computers, unfiltered digital devices with poorly designed switching
devices the noise on HF continually raised, noisy bit by noisy bit. The
breaking point for me was when 20 to 10 meters was almost impossible to
listen to when one neighbour watched his oversized plasma TV less than 60
foot from our one tower.
We bought a house in the country with our nearest neighbour now being just
over 1/2 km away. Though I have yet to get any HF gear up and running in our
new house, I can fire the HF rig up in the car and have a near zero floor
noise on the rig's meter, with the preamp on. The same setup in town sitting
in the driveway of the previous home would net me s-5 to s-7 noise level at
the best of times.
I am really looking forward to getting my modest little contest station back
on the air.
Oh, there are tradeoffs to country living, like no pizza delivery.
Catch you on the bands,
Eric - Ve3gsi.
