Update:

The Thinkpad 380ED (an older model laptop to be 
sure) was satisfied with a Vbatt source w/o the engine 
running - diagnostics indicated the battery was in 
charge mode ... but this particular laptop also has just 
a 10.8 V 'pile' (battery).
