This is part of the same discussion back in November. Maybe it will help
you in making your decision. The high quality CE02 branded monitors seem to
much better as a class than the old monitors that were lucky to be FCC Class
A (for commercial environment and not for home use). Let us know how you
make out as there is always a lot of interest in this subject. I have not
found that monitors change dramatically over a couple of years, though.
There was also some discussion on the LCD displays about being extremely
quiet, but being more susceptable to interference from the transmitter RF,
which is worse.

feet from the station. My old monitor had to be turned off to operate some
bands and frequencies. I would think an LCD display would be pretty clean,
but their picture quality leaves a lot to be desired in terms of the
legibility of small characters, etc.
I was more concerned about the computer and motherboard, but the new Athlon
1600 with Asus A7V133 motherboard in a well shielded Antec cabinet is also
clean. No RFI into the computer with 1 KW. There are several split
torroids on a lot of the lines to the computer left over from the previous
computer installation (500Mhz Compaq).
Manufacturers are now branding much of their equipment and boards to FCC
level B which is not as good as the European standard, but it is a heck of a
lot better than the old FCC level A which was only required for an
industrial environment.

I wonder if this is something that the ARRL's RFI lab could address by
running an RF emissions test on the various LCD (and CRT) monitors at
appropriate frequencies and publishing the results. It would sure help
a lot of hams who have to decide which monitor to buy.

The CE02 Spec is a TEST specification, the same as FCC Class B, except it is
more consumer oriented in that it requires lower levels of emission and
susceptability. The CE seal is normally listed in the advertising and was
printed on the outside of the shipping box for the Mitsubishi Diamond Pro
87TXM. I researched it on the net before purchasing Mail Order. My wife
has a 19 in Sony in the other room, that is also very clean and have never
heard a peep from it either. Both use the non-shadow mask type of tube
construction (you can see two very faint horizontal lines when viewing a
white background).
I would did around through every specification after living through the
noisy monitor I had for several years. It was a very old 1991 13 in
monitor.

Wendell, is conformance with this spec required in order to put the CE seal
on a monitor? Put another way, can one be sure that any computer that
shows the CE seal has met this standard? Or do you have to go digging in
the instruction book, specs, etc?

Folks:
What are the present views/opinions on monitors (specific brands/models,
pse.) that aren't complete trash in the EMI department? Understandably,
cleanup is theoretically possible but often difficult. OTOH, cases,
etc. are relatively simple to clean up.
Presently, I can hear direct radiation at 50 MHz from two monitors (the
enclosures, not via the cables) in my own QTH which are sometimes a
serious problem for weak signal/DX work. I did run into a list on the
web at the Yankee Clipper Contest Club site on monitors but the info
appears to be 1999 vintage and this area changes like one should change
one's socks!
Since I am in the market for a 17" monitor, I thought it would be good
to at least start with something decent, if it exists. Any opinions
would be appreciated.
