Here is the current forecast discussion on space weather and geophysical activity, issued 2023 Jan 02 1230 UTC.

Solar Activity

24 hr Summary: Solar activity was low. The largest event of the period was an impulsive C9/1f flare at 02/0621 UTC from Region 3176 (N19W23, Eho/beta). No significant changes were observed in the five active regions with sunspots. No Earth-directed CMEs were detected in available data.

Forecast: Solar activity is expected to be low with a chance for M-class flare activity over 02-04 Jan.

Energetic Particle

24 hr Summary: The greater than 2 MeV electron flux reached high levels with a peak flux of 2,890 pfu observed at 01/1815 UTC. The greater than 10 MeV proton flux was steady at background levels.

Forecast: The greater than 2 MeV electron flux is expected to reach high levels on 02-04 Jan. The greater than 10 MeV proton flux is expected to persist at background levels throughout the forecast period.

Solar Wind

24 hr Summary: The solar wind environment was slightly enhanced this period under persistent positive polarity CH HSS influences. Solar wind speeds ranged from 460-560 km/s, total field strength was steady near 5 nT, and Bz ranged between +4/-5 nT.

Forecast: Positive polarity CH HSS influences are expected to wane over 02 Jan, with ambient conditions expected to prevail over 03 Jan. An enhanced solar wind environment is expected on 04 Dec due to negative polarity CH HSS influences and the anticipated arrival of a CME from 30 Dec.

Geospace

24 hr Summary: The geomagnetic field ranged from quiet to active levels this period under persistent positive polarity CH HSS influences.

Forecast: The geomagnetic field is expected to be quiet to unsettled on 02 Jan under waning CH HSS influences. Quiet conditions are expected to prevail on 03 Jan. Minor geomagnetic storm periods are likely on 04 Jan due to the onset of negative polarity CH HSS influences and the anticipated arrival of a CME from 30 Dec.
