Eric,
I'm using the ORION II with version 2.037j and so don't have the same
equipment, but when I did have the ORION running version 1.*** it would do
this once in a while. As you say turning the radio on and off would reset
it. I also found that pushing the MENUS button would also reset it,
usually. Pushing the MENUS button and holding it until the version was
displayed also seemed to work in some cases, but not all.
Generally if you continue to have this problem I'd suggest doing a battery
reset to clear out the RAM and perhaps whatever is not right will reload in
a more stable configuration or something. If I remember right you hold in
the VFOB>M button while turning on the rig, or if that isn't the
combination, it would be the LCK button under the VFOB>M button. I don't
want to try on mine, cuz it erases the memories stored.
73 and good luck.

During the ARRL DX contest this past weekend, my Orion (v1 w/1.373b5
firmware) went to sleep about 6 times, just as VE7TK described it in his
email of April 5, 2006 below.
Only once were we (W2CDO, who was the other op, and I) conscious of what
may have been the cause -- when we plugged in a headset, and then only
once when we did that.
All the other times, we individually noticed that while the noise floor
seemed the same, there were no signals to be heard. We ended running an
ever so slight amount of audio from the B VFO to monitor things.
The monitor and sidetone functions also died twice, unrelated to the
receiver dying.
In both cases, powering down and back up cured the problem. But when
you're CQing during a contest, those seconds lost are crucial. You lose
the Q's and the run frequency!
Has anyone figured out what's going on here?

From VE7TK:
I am having some issues with static and my Orion 565. When I first
acquired my Orion I noticed that on occasion when I plugged in the
earphones the
receiver would die. All the lights were on but "nobody was home." I wrote
it off as the wrong type of headphones
8 ohm stereo).
Time went by and I acquired some 60 ohm impedance David Clark stereo
headphones and tried them out.
Same problem! This has occurred with both version 1.xxx and 2.xxx firmware.
(I have reported the
symptoms to Ten-Tec Service and Ditsnbits.)
Now I carefully ground the tip, ring and sleeve before attempting to plug in
the phones but sometimes this doesn't
even work. It's a real pain if your trying to get some rare one and grab the
phones only to have the receiver die!
I'm on the wet coast and humidity is not an issue plus I don't own a cat and
the station is well grounded.
Now the question - have others noticed this issue? Turning the Orion Off
and ON rejuvenates the receiver.
Thoughts appreciated.

Rick

Hi All,
Thanks to all of you for you help with understanding the in and outs of
PSK31 and the Orion1 & Orion11. We managed to get both up and running. On
the Orion1... we went with the iMic & the USB connection, and a special
built patch cable using RF shielded wire and keying the Rig with the VOX.
On the Orion11 we are using the sound card and the same special built cable
both are working nicely, however, as with anything we had some anomolies.
On the Orion1 we are currently down, but with the warm weather in the 40's
we've established that the coax is faulty and with the help of some hot
water we were able to thaw out the ground to replace the coax then found
that we were losing half our radial system because of a intermittent
connection on the attachment to the DX88 Vertical....say high VSWR!. We'll
get that taken care of tomorrw and should be back up and running by the
week-end.
Now I know the neighbors think I'm a little off....here's this guy in a
short sleeve shirt out on the lawn pouring hot water and running a garden
hose at 28 degrees. But Hey!, here in Iowa when hell freezes over, the
buses usually run only about two hours late.
