Hi Bob,

Sorry for the late reply. I'm behind on my email!

  I just bought a Sennheiser HMD-280 Headset.

  Here are my initial impressions...

  1. It's comfortable on my head, no problems after wearing the phones for
a couple of hours.

  2. The mic has more bass then the Heil HC4 or HC5 headset mics, I set the
TX audio setting to -5 and it "sounds good to me" in the monitor.

  3. If you have loud computer fans or amplifier fans these are a good
choice if you don't want active noise suppression. They cover the entire
ear and really quiet external noise.

  4. I performed Bob Heil's XLR mod on my Orion and now the headset plugs
right into the XLR female jack / 4 pin mic plug adapter I made. The mod was
quite easy, It took about 45 minutes. I did add an additional step since I
wanted to make sure the trace leading to pin 4 was cut before I grounded it.
I turned the rig on and used a volt meter to confirm there was not +8 volts
on the connector.

  5. The headset has 300 ohm impedance and I haven't heard anything "funny"
listening to the Orion. I've taken them to work and listened to music on my
computer and noticed digital noise from my sound card that I can't hear in
my other headphones. I can hear the noise change in time with clicking the
mouse on the Windows Media Player controls. They sound great listening to
other audio sources so I don't think it's a problem with the headset, I just
find it interesting.

Good luck finding a headset that works well for you...

At the risk of starting another looooong discussion, what are Orion
users using for headsets?

Ten Tec suggests using a minimum of 32 ohm impedence stereo cans.

My Sony MDR V600 are excellent on cw and ssb (but no boom for mic). My
Heil BM10 are good on ssb and okay on cw and my Heil ProSet (about five
years old) are good on ssb and horrible on CW. (The ProSet is excellent
on cw with my Kenwood TS850)

Has anyone used the Heil new ProSet Plus with Orion, and if so how are
they, particularly on cw? 73 bob de w9ge
