Was the s-meter reading going up or just the audio?
On my qth which is very noisy at times (S 6-8 noise on the 4x40m loop) the S
meter goes down to S3 when I use NR3, and the S/N ratio is improved
accordingly both on SSB and CW, even with AGC threshold around 1.0
