I'm sure others have done worse but we've done tower INSTALLS in -2F* temps
w/ 10-15mph winds...it was the wind that was killer.
We are prepared to maintain our equipment in-house at every site in any
condition, other than major icing when we don't even go near a tower.
We have found (as others have as well) that amps are evil and in the
end....cause you problems. I can run fiber and power up a tower in
flex-sealtight conduit cheaper than i can install LMR-600/900. And....we'll
have few problems with noise, have better throughput and distances.
Weight the gains...high power card next to the antenna has benefits that
out-weigh the drawbacks, at least they do in our environment.

Others in my company also feel that putting radio's 100-120 feet in the air
is also a bad idea because of the summer environment and ease of
troubleshooting in the winter months.
If they already have the heliax run.... Woohoo!

That's what we've decided as well. Amps are out....high power cards next to
the antennas are in.
I don't mind climbing up 500' to fix things...only had to do it 2 times in 2
years. Not to bad.

I agree as well.. they all have their problems.
Going forward, we are only using high powered cards in all newly deployed
systems.

Subject: [Karlnet] Re: Amps
I'd have to disagree. I have a bunch of YDI amps that have given me
nothing but trouble. We have tried YDI, Hyperlink, Teletronics and RF
Linx. We have removed all the YDI amps from the system.
I have 2 Teletronics amps that have been removed from the system. They
each have lost their receive gain.
I now have 3 Hyperlink amps that quit when they get too hot.
Of the rest, they are about 50/50 between RF Linx and Hyperlink.
I have never had a RF Linx amp fail.
We use top mounted amps on any location that we would not want to climb
in bad weather. If it is safe to climb in wind/rain/snow and their is
power available we mount our radio gear on top. At this time we no
longer use POE for access points.
As to a high power KN-50, why not just put a 200mW card in it? If you
run max antenna gain, (24db) and a 200mW, (23.5db) card you will be just
under legal power (47.5db US) for a PtP link.
