Indeed, although they look similar, I think the YDI amp is better quality.
Amps are most useful when you have long cable runs. And it should be right
next to the antenna.
Although 7/8" or greater heliax seems to perform as well as having the Amps
with 600 or 400 LMR. (probably about the same cost too)

I put the amp close to the antenna to minimize RF loss along the
transmission line. This way I can feed the amp/antenna 50' away from the
base station running a 20mW card using LMR 900. I actually think this is
overkill, but it's what we had. I haven't run the numbers, but I think the
amp would still fire over that length of LMR 600.
