John made some excellent points, well thought out. However, with
regard to security fixes, ect., most of the malicious code coming out
now is not targeted against older systems. For example, that latest
worm which Microsoft has patched does not affect 98, 98 SE, or 2000.
In essence, using proper security techniques, ( and that means NOT
opening any attachments unless you are absolutely positive about them
) ( even from your mother ) keeping your anti V up to date, and
installing a firewall.
I use Norton in both cases, and when the firewall ran a scan, it found
45 applications which could access the internet. I block every one of
them except Netscape and the NASA time server. Adobe, media player,
several Microsoft programs, and something called "Web Rifle" (
whatever that is ) which have no business messing with my machine. I
also removed many of the MS programs such as chat, outlook, and such.
I also do one other thing. On a weekly basis, I use the Norton "Ghost"
and back up my
entire hard drive to another HD. Then use the spare until the next
backup. If I do get hit, it's just a matter of changing to the spare,
and the dreaded "format" on the old one.
